2026 Subaru Outback at Oak Mountain State Park trailhead in autumn foliage, Birmingham Alabama

Head south on I-65 for about 20 minutes, pull into Pelham, and you're standing at the gate of Alabama's largest state park, with two different hiking experiences waiting for you and your gear in the back. October is the window when Oak Mountain sheds the summer humidity and trades it for ridge-top views and the trail conditions your Subaru was designed to meet.

The 2026 Subaru Outback handles this trip without a second thought, and the Forester will too if that's what's in your driveway. One caveat is worth being straight about. If you're chasing the blazing New England-level color show, Alabama isn't that. What Oak Mountain delivers in October is more subtle, warm golds and burnt orange across the hardwood ridges. For a 40-minute drive from Birmingham's east side, that's plenty of reason to pack a lunch and go.

What's the Plan at a Glance?

A full autumn day at Oak Mountain breaks down cleanly into a morning climb and an afternoon wind-down, and most of the work is just getting your timing right. The park sits at 200 Terrace Drive in Pelham, open 7 AM to sunset, and you'll pay a per-person day-use fee at the gate.

Stop What to Do Best Time Parking
Main gate entry Pay day-use fee, grab a trail map First thing, 7-8 AM Pull-through entry lane
Peavine Falls Easy 1.3-mile loop to a 65-foot waterfall Morning (shade keeps it cool) Peavine parking lot near the park office
Kings Chair Overlook Moderate 4.4-mile loop, 751-ft elevation gain, ridge views Late morning into early afternoon North Trailhead gravel lot (large)
Double Oak Lake shore Flat lakeside walk, good for dogs and kids Afternoon wind-down Terrace Drive roadside pulloff
Camp or head home Tent sites, RV hookups, and cabins available for overnight stays Reservations at reserve.alapark.com Campground lot

Peavine Falls: The Easy Morning Start

Peavine is the loop to start with if you've got kids, dogs, or anyone in your group who wants the payoff without the grind, though it stays an easy outing rather than a workout. The loop runs about 1.3 miles with around 305 feet of elevation change, and it ends at a 65-foot waterfall tucked into the hardwood bottom.

The trail is well-marked as a Green and White Trail combination, and the trailhead sits close to the park office, so you're not hunting for it. Figure an hour, maybe 90 minutes.

Fall is the right call for this particular walk. Humidity drops sharply by mid-October in Alabama, which is when the pine-studded ridges and hardwood bottoms at Oak Mountain are at their most comfortable. The 2026 Subaru Forester has 74.4 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats folded, per Subaru's published specs, so if you're loading a stroller, a dog crate, or a bike for the paved paths, that extra-wide rear gate opening does real work here. We see families use every inch of that gate opening on days like this.

Insider note: Mornings at Peavine are shaded by the ridge, so the light is flat for photos before 10 AM. Come back in the afternoon and the western light catches the falls face-on. Worth the second loop if you've got the time.

Kings Chair Overlook: The One That Earns the View

Kings Chair is the climb people drive in from Mountain Brook and Irondale to tackle, and it earns its reputation, as long as you're up for an actual ascent and not a stroll. The 2026 Subaru Ascent fits neatly in the North Trailhead gravel lot (large and easy to navigate), and from there the Blue Trail runs about 4.4 miles round-trip with roughly 751 feet of elevation gain. No shortcuts here. The trail levels onto the ridge and then drops you at an east-facing rocky outcrop with a view that reaches toward the Talladega National Forest on a clear October day.

Late October is the best window for this overlook. Once the deciduous trees start to thin at the canopy, you'll see the sightlines from the ridge open up considerably. Mornings start cool in the mid-40s to 50s by late October, and the ridge is exposed, so the temperature difference from the valley floor is real. Bring water and layers.

Next step: Reservations for cabins and campsites at Oak Mountain fill up on fall weekends. Book through reserve.alapark.com before you commit to an overnight stay.

Why Your Subaru Is Already Ready for This Drive

The drive itself asks almost nothing of your Subaru, but the parking is where it earns its keep, because the corridor down I-65 from Birmingham to Pelham is plain pavement and the lots at the other end are not. The North Trailhead lot at Oak Mountain is gravel, and the Peavine area can get soft after rain. Ground clearance stops being a spec-sheet number the moment you're on that gravel. The 2026 Subaru Outback lists 8.7 inches of ground clearance on standard trims, with Wilderness going to 9.5 inches, per Subaru's published specs, and Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive is standard across the lineup. X-MODE, which optimizes the drivetrain for low-traction surfaces, comes standard on the Outback.

Alabama weather in October swings around a lot. The Shelby County foothills can see a cold rain by mid-month. EyeSight Driver Assist Technology, standard on the 2026 Outback, works on the I-65 return run when rain tightens following distances. The system won't drive the car for you. It does take some strain off a tired Friday afternoon.

The honest tradeoff is worth saying out loud. If you're loading a full mountain bike setup on a roof rack, account for the Outback's highway efficiency dropping from its EPA-rated 31 mpg on the 2.5L trim once you add roof drag. That's physics, not a knock on the car. The cargo hold handles most trail gear on its own. No roof rack required.
